How To Take Good Care of Your Jewelry

The type of jewelry you wear tells a lot about you. Your jewelry can be an extension of your personality and self-expression. However, your precious jewelry gradually deteriorates over time and it’s vital to take good care of it. Here are some useful jewelry care tips to preserve your prized possessions:

Avoid exposure to sunlight

Sunlight can have damaging effects on your jewelry just like how it affects your skin. Gemstones exposed to sunlight will result in color fading and makes them less durable. As for pearls, they will become bleached after prolonged sun exposure. Prevent the damaging effects of the sun and store your jewelry in a closed box.

Polish them regularly

Cleaning your jewelry regularly ensures that they continue to look their best. While household items can do the job, a professional cloth is the best choice. Using ordinary products such as paper towels or tissues will damage your jewelry, so it’s best to avoid using them. Rubbing your jewelry with alcohol is fine, but never use bleach. Platinum and sterling silver jewelry can develop a patina ( a dark glow in the edges), so it’s highly recommended to polish them always. You can either do it at home or you can let a professional jeweler do it for you.

Avoid using soap and chemicals

Sometimes, we tend to forget that soap can affect the natural shine of jewelry. When your jewelry comes in contact with solvents, it becomes dull and looks dirty. It is also not advisable to take a shower or wash your hands while wearing your jewelry. So, remove all your jewelry before washing your hands or taking a bath. The same rule applies to household chores. Water that contains a certain amount of minerals will negatively react with your jewelry.

Look out for critical spots

Jewelry has weak spots. For diamond or other gems, it’s advisable to check the claws and the setting of the stone. A claw that feels loose can be a sign of weakening. Therefore, they will eventually break and the gemstones could fall out and get lost. It is better to pay to have these claws fixed.

Your precious jewelry should be treated with love and care. Especially if they hold a sentimental value. Follow these tips so they stay strong and shiny for many years to come.
